Watercolor Painting – Basics 101

One of the biggest reasons that students fail in painting Watercolor is:

• Judging your early artistic efforts unrealistically.
• Comparing your work to experienced artists or maybe a photograph.

This is complete self-abuse. The one question you must ask yourself when you stand before the whole world and utter “Oh, what a mess!”  Ask yourself this question, “Am I making a fair comparison?”

This is not a fair comparson, is it?

You cannot make a comparison of other paintings produced by experienced artists or maybe a photograph. This is purely self-abuse swimming in negative thoughts.

This is my best advice for this “malady,” and that is to allow yourself to become a bad artist and allow the watercolor to take its natural course.

It is normal to have expectations that are unfoundedly high. You might be a victim of your own internalized perfectionism – a nasty internal and external critic who resides in the left side of the brain keeping a constant stream of remarks disguised as the truth, such as:

“YOU CALL THAT A PAINTING?”  “WHAT A JOKE; WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN BE AN ARTIST?” AND, SO ON AND SO ON, IT CHATTERS TO YOU.

SOMETHING YOU MUST UNDERSTAND AND NEED TO KNOW, YOUR NEGATIVE OPINIONS ARE NOT THE TRUTH; YOU MUST HOLD ONTO THIS THOUGHT.

Now,  let’s go and have a good time with watercolor.  It is the most exciting medium out there – knowing full well “you can do it.”
